Creston was founded in 1884 on the Rancho Huerohuero Mexican land grant. This rural community is located just east of Atascadero and Templeton is noted for scenic horse ranches and lovely oak trees studded rolling hills.
Creston the level land around the community was once used for growing alfalfa hay, dry farming (wheat and barley) and livestock grazing. Most homes in the area consisted of modest farmhouses. However, due to the area's scenic nature and its reasonable proximity to urban areas, it has become a very popular area for rural home sites. The small, older modest homes have given way to large, luxury estates, vineyards, wineries, and olive groves.
Creston was home to Cardiff Stud Farm (Creston Farms), a place once owned by Canadian-American television personality Alex Trebek, and where a number of retired American thoroughbred racehorses were taken care of. Cardiff Stud Farm was sold in 2008 and is now an event center called Windfall Farms.
The community gathers at one of the local restaurants, The Loading Chute or Longbranch or at the Creston Classic Rodeo traditionally held in September."
